The Government and Nairobi County Cabinet have approved a Joint transformation of the City Eastlands area for the first time in the last forty years. Also in the plan discussed for over six hours is an ambitious modernization of Pumwani Hospital to match its status as the largest Maternal hospital in East Africa. President Uhuru Kenyatta, His Deputy William Ruto, several cabinet secretaries and the Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero accompanied by his city cabinet agreed to begin a comprehensive urban renewal of housing estates within the city. Maringo, Kaloleni, Shauri Moyo, Bahati, Mbotela Makongeni, Gorofani/Bondeni, Starehe, Ofafa Kunguni, and Ziwani are among the estates to undergo the turnaround. The estates were chosen because their current design is suitable for development of modern low cost housing with minimal disruption. “What we have achieved today is what devolution should be about, mutual relations between National Governments and County Governors and their cabinets,” President Uhuru Kenyatta noted. Adding, “ we will ensure that this cordial relationship becomes a model for other counties on how we should work.” Deputy President William Ruto on his part said, “We are committed to a spirit of true partnership and we will ensure that we join hands where we can so as to deliver on our shared mandate to the benefit of the Kenyan People.” “ We have a duty to ensure the People of Nairobi have access to first class services and a safe environment and we will knock every door and partner with national government to achieve that goal,” Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero noted. The meeting also agreed to construct four new operating theatres and upgrade three existing health facilities in the city. There was also consensus to develop joint urban plans, Solid Waste Management, Light Rail Construction and joint identification of alternate cemetery land. Rewritten for the Web - PSCU Digital Team
