The Government has just announced a $3.5 million incentive scheme for young beneficiaries to relocate to Christchurch to work in the rebuild. Under the scheme, a beneficiary outside the Christchurch region aged 18 to 24, who holds a job offer of at least 30 hours a week for more than 91 days, will receive a lump sum of $3000. The scheme has met with a backlash from housing providers who argue that the scheme will put further pressure on the housing market. Miles Construction generally supports the scheme but we agree that the main challenge facing the industry is in fulfilling positions that require professional and trade qualifications and experience.
