The Graduate Student Organizing Committee/United Auto Workers - TopicsExpress

The Graduate Student Organizing Committee/United Auto Workers (G.S.O.C./U.A.W.) at NYU is the first graduate student-workers union on a private university campus in the United States. During the recent election, on 17 September 2014, representatives of the Academic Workers for a Democratic Union (A.W.D.U.)—the reformers in the union—won a majority position within the bargaining committee. During the election race, the AWDU ran on a platform for a fair contract and increased collective participation and transparency in union operations. The NYU AWDU reformers galvanized the student body, with voter turnout much higher than during the previous round of elections. Representatives of this reform majority will join us in this roundtable discussion to talk about their organizing work, their principles, and the political ends of their efforts. The event will conclude with a question and answer period—we invite student organizers in and around New York City to come take part in this critical conversation.
