The Grammys: I went into the show expecting to dislike them, but was surprised to learn that I liked much of the performances... even some of the ones I would have bet that I would not like. Pink on a rope was interesting. Although I am generally repelled by todays urban music, their on stage performances were certainly up a couple of notches from Kanye West. At least the sets were exciting. Weve come a long way with visual (lights & efx) enhancements. Carole King was wonderful (as usual). I LOVED Willie and the Outlaws - even with Blake Shelton. Daft Punk served up some good beats and the segment with Eivets Rednow was special, even if Little Stevie DID look and sound kinda weak. (DAMN I am getting old!). I REALLY want to know the whole story behind the two robots !!!! (Who ARE those guys?). Lordes performance was just riveting! What a fresh and unique artist. Taylor Swift did an adequate job of delivering, even if she DID decide not to smile or acknowledge the audiences appreciation at the end of the song. I even got a kick out of the wedding segment. Ryan Lewis impressed me with his stage persona. Was that an aging Madonna with the cane? And Ozzy! OZZY! WTH, man? I never really personally liked Lars and Metallica but that guy on grand piano (Lang Lang) MADE THEM HAPPEN. Stellar performance and when they kicked it into heavy metal overdrive I was sitting on the edge of my recliner. Again- the stage lighting and efx gave their performance a real boost. I even liked Bruno Mars and Imagine Dragons! (Maybe Im coming down with something). Katy Perry in a bubble... not so much. And in the Best For Last Department... of course . . the reason I recorded the program so I wouldnt miss them (I was doing my HiTek Redneck radio show) - - The on stage reunion of Sir Paul and Sir Ringo (that just SOUNDS funny, doesnt it?). Paul decided to perform Queenie Eye, which sort of left me wanting. Frankly I guess I expected more for a new offering from such a giant in the industry. Ringo followed along nicely, getting constant direction from Pauls drummer Abe Laboriel, Jr. The band was basically Pauls regular group + Ringo for added Star Power. I know how these aging heroes feel. At 67, it seems the past couple of years has really taken its toll on my body. Some people age better than others, but a life of rock and roll - whether you are famous or not - can be hard past 60. Ringos performance of Photograph was more to my liking, even if The Ringed One was a little ruff around the edges. His singing was a bit labored. Hes never been known for Golden Pipes, but last nights performance showed his frailness and age. He sure had a lot of help from his friends, though, with Peter Frampton and Steve Lukather on vocals and guitars and Don Was playing bass... or should I say Don Was was playing bass ? As a rule I dislike these Awards Shows. They usually pander to the powerful people of the moment. But I must say that IMHO the organizers of this years Grammy Awards Show did a much better job of putting their best foot forward. Apparently, there IS a new breed of professional artist/performer that shows great talent and actually true life Star Power. I suppose the cream DOES rise to the top . . occasionally.
