The Grand A police officer with California Dreams and white picket fences, A year from retirement, accidents happen to lower defenses, White coated doctors with pills to hock, promise an end to pain, Numbing far more than promised, injuries that are not as plain, Started with just an extra pill or two to make it through each day, Soon he was shopping doctors and lying to keep family at bay, Once proud cop sinks till hes a thief, sickness commands he obeys, Mans best friend now an enemy, vicious scars as he tries to flee, Put on the other side of bars by his former friends, guilty his only plea, Years in prison his life down the drain: career, respect, and family, New hope, new life in a small Midwest town in a mens recovery home, You learned and you grew till you thought you had beat this cruel syndrome, Thats when we met: a gaunt, meth addicted teen desperate for a dad, You needed to be needed to matter again, you freely gave all you had, We sat for hours and shared our pain, and tried to see Gods plan, You taught me a lot about life lessons and a lot about being a man, Soon you left to live life on your own to make a brand new start, I started to lose you that day but you will never leave my heart, Flash back a hundred years in a steel boom time they built The Grand A red carpet hotel with luxury to spare, truly grand the finest in the land, But like you better days had come and gone, time had taken its toll, You thought this was a perfect place to rebuild all that life had stole, You said isnt it grand? I had my doubts but was scared you wouldnt hear, I wanted you to be happy, but what happened next confirmed my fear, You started to isolate in your one room dream on Broadway and 8th, The Rockford pimps, whores, and junkies severely tried your faith, The great Phil I had known destroyed by a little white pill ripping us apart, Cause of death declared heart failure, but put more simply: a broken heart, You died like a pauper with no one to cry and remember your life, If you can hear, I never got to say, you mattered, you changed my life, A sad story Phil lost his battle but not the war trying to find his Grand, Hes forever at peace wanted, needed, eternally loved in his Fathers hand.
