The Grapevine Blood Bank Scheme – It is standard procedure that anyone needing an operation is told that a certain amount of units of blood are required and must be collected in the name of the patient and the hospital, before the operation can take place, this can cause extra stress for relatives looking for donors. After making enquiries at Corfu General Hospital, we have been informed that an account can be opened for the Grapevine Groups. All you have to do when making your regular donations is to donate in the name of the Grapevine Group, and this will be available for all group members, from Corfu & Paxos Groups, family & friends. The group would then transfer from its account to the patients account the amount of units needed. The group would need Patients name, treating Hospital & Doctor. Many people who have had operations, will find that they have had extra units donated in their name, and this blood was not used… this can be transferred to the groups account and available for other members. It does not matter what Blood Type you are – all types are collected. We would like to ask for volunteers with either a small hotel, or large bar/restaurant area, in all parts of the Island, (winter & summer months) where a blood drive could be organized; this has been done in the past and proved a huge success. These events would be prominently advertised and would help as a reminder to give. Also blood can be donated at the General Hospital – Basement level.
