The Great Barrier Reef was super but the most memorable experience of my visit to Cairns some years ago was seeing hundreds of fruit bats on the trees in downtown Cairns. I also took a Farm tour and saw how they purposely keep mango trees short in height by trimming them and then covering the mangoes with fine mesh nets when they are in season to keep the fruit bats from destroying their mango crop. Fruit bats are a delicacy in Guam and the rest of the Mariana Islands, but are close to being extinct here. Nothing better than fanihi cooked in coconut milk soup, but I havent had any for decades.
