The Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung (North Korean typewriters had the title all on one key) had decided that the time had come for the peninsula to be reunited, especially since he had been promised support in that endeavor from both Stalin and Mao Zedong. The invading North Koreans crossed the 39th Parallel early on a Sunday morning. The United Nations Security Council, at the urging of US Ambassador Warren Austin and in the absence of Soviet Ambassador Yakov Malik (who would certainly have vetoed it) adopted a resolution calling on member states to come to the aid of the Republic of Korea in repelling North Korean aggression. With residual forces remaining in Korea until this day, President Truman promptly ordered American military forces into Korea to help the South Koreans fight the north. June 27, 1950. Sixty-three years ago today.
