The Great O Antiphon for today is O Adonai, Adonai being one of the epithets Jews use for God, whose real name was forbidden the lips of mortals in the period of the Second Temple, save those of the High Priest. Adonai means Lord and carries the connotation of mercy. The early Christians borrowed this title and applied it to Jesus Christ, whom we confess as the Messiah, the fulfilment of Jewish hope and of the prophecies in what Christians call the Old Testament that is, the Scriptures of the Jewish people). Isaiah, for example, looks forward to a figure clad with righteousness as a belt around his waist, and faithfulness a belt around his loins. To see mercy and righteousness and faithfulness beginning to break like the dawn at the edge of a dark and expectant world is what Advent is really about.
