The Great Victorian Fish Count 2014 Over the last month a number of Victorian marine focussed community groups have taken up the challenge of surveying fish within marine protected areas. Due to changes at VNPA who have previously coordinated the count, this year Parks Victoria assisted in coordinating the events that took place at Mushroom Reef MS, Bunurong MNP, Jawbone MS, Point Cooke MS, Barwon Bluff MS, Eagle Rock MS, and at the Merri MS in Warrnambool. A huge thanks to Shannon Hurley at Wilsons Prom who helped to coordinate and mainatin info to participants, and to all the group leaders across the state that delivered another highly successful and safe Great Victorian Fish Count in 2014. Of note at the Bluff count we actually had the first incident requiring a report in relation to an injury recived from a very feisty and aggro Horseshoe Leatherjacket (see pic) that had a go at a couple of snorkellers (Kathy and Hannah) and actually drew blood, fortunately only needing a bandaid. Leatherjackets are in the same fishy family as tropical trigger fish that are well known for their territorial agressive behaviours. I have attached a couple of pics from the event at Barwon Bluff MS on Sunday 14th Dec.
