The Grenfell Panthers have made it through to the second week of the semi-finals following a convincing 41 – 15 win over Canowindra last Saturday at Grenfell. For the first time that anyone can remember, the Grenfell team fielded 3 sets of brothers and around the same in in-laws to give the day a family atmosphere both on and off the field. Canowindra drew first blood in the first half with a penalty goal to be up 3 – 0 but this was the end of their luck. Grenfell hit back with a try to Matt Randall around the 10 minute mark. Two further tries through the backs from hard running and good pace went to Mick D’Ombrain and Stuart Hughes. To round out the first half the a pre-planned drive from a line out lead to Ben Kelly’s try to have the score 24 – 3 at half time. The only down side to Grenfell’s first half was a knee injury to Tom Dinham which seen him off for the remainder of the game. The momentum of the team continued into the second half with Ant Dixon crossing the line 5 minutes in to take the score up to 29 – 3. Grenfell had a short lapse in concentration and Canowindra managed to score twice to narrow the gap and have the score 29 – 15. The Panthers regrouped from there and in a blast from the past the Hughes brothers combined in one of their signature moves to enable Mark to cross the line. This was converted and the score went to 36 – 15. Not to be outdone, the D’Ombrain brothers showed their own move with Jeremy scoring to have the final score at 41 – 15. All 24 players who took to the paddock on Saturday gave it 110% in a team effort and every player was worthy of points. Unfortunately for the Canowindra that means the end of their season, but Grenfell will go on to play Blayney in Blayney this Saturday who went down to Condo last weekend 23 – 27. Grenfell will need to play as strong as they have in the last couple of games and can’t afford to have any concentration lapses otherwise Blayney will take advantage of this and they will definitely be coming out fired up after not expecting to go down to Condo at home last week. There is only 1 change to the 24 players from last week with Alec Walsh coming in for the injured Tom Dinham. Grenfell will be made up of Al Leibick, Corey Clark, Brandon Doig, Matt Reid, Anthony Dixon, Kyle Anderson, Bill Dinham, Jake Taylor, Ben Kelly, Andrew Brown, Mark Hughes, Mick D’Ombrain, Alex Carney, Matt Randall, Stuart Hughes. To come off the bench Grenfell will have Steve Cooper, Alex Carney, Jeremy D’Ombrain, Sean King, Sam Johnson, Sam Tognetti, Cole Pedrick, Josh Knight, Hugh Matthews and Alec Walsh. The team would again love to have the support that they had here last weekend so bring your jacket and come to Blayney for a 3.15 kick-off for what is always a hard fought game between these 2 teams. No doubt with both teams season on the line this will be a great game.
