The Guest. A highly-stylized action thriller that pays homage to 80s horror/thriller and action genre with its neon lights and John Carpenter-esque choice of soundtrack. The first two acts of the film led me to expect plot points more along the lines of Ryan Goslings Drive or Mark Wahlbergs Fear but it goes nowhere near that direction. I dont watch Downton Abbey but I am familiar with Dan Stevens because he narrates a lot of the audio books that I listen to. What makes this movie work is definitely Dan Stevens ability to channel charming house guest and then transform into a psychotic killer in a heartbeat. This definitely shows that Dan has a good potential to be an action star too. How about a role in the next Marvel/DC movie? In fact, in case Chris Evans plans to retire as Cap, Dan Stevens can definitely do justice to the role. Unfortunately I found the third act and the ending really ridiculous and disappointing. They set up the characters and the tension really well in the beginning but they never really tie up the ends with the same skill. The writing is all over the place. The only saving grace is Dan Stevens performance. **SPOILER** If you think about it, the story didnt even need to happen. An ex-military fugitive escapes from lab experimentation and goes to great lengths to hide (like having plastic surgery done) but why did he need to be part of this familys life? For someone whos so meticulous and precise with his killing and planning and covering his tracks, didnt he think that getting involved with other people would lead the authorities to him? He clearly had a lot of money so why couldnt he have just moved from one hotel to another or fled the country? https://youtube/watch?v=y0E2Qh6wLS4
