The Guild of Students met with the management of the Campus this - TopicsExpress

The Guild of Students met with the management of the Campus this afternoon to discuss the issue of the withholding of grades. The Principal, Professor Clement Sankat, noted that the decision was in fact taken at Academic Board meeting that the grades would be released later than usual so that the marks would be thoroughly reviewed to ensure that students were not negatively impacted by the new GPA system. These results, based on a convening of the Board of Examiners meeting for the purpose of reviewing the results, would have been released either on or after January 15th 2015. The University noted that this may have caused some issues for students in varying circumstances and assured that systems would be put in place to ensure that students concerns would be addressed. This decision and commitment still stands. However recent developments revealed an impasse between the University and its lecturers who are yet to receive retroactive payment from the UWI as the government is yet to make the funds for this available. As it stands a number of lectures are withholding their students marks after the following statement was issued by the West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT): At the WIGUT general meeting held on January 5th 2015, the meetingdirected that all WIGUT members should refrain from entering marks for semester1 2014/2015 on banner until such time that WIGUT is advised by the campus Principal and campus senior management of the date that payment of arrears insalaries will be effected. The Guild of Students strongly detests any move to hold the students of the St. Augustine Campus at ransom and believes that good sense must prevail. The Guild would do everything in its power to ensure that the students do not continue to be disenfranchised and would work with the campus management to ensure that measures are put in place to protect the students from registration issues, failure to access tuition funding based on the inability to furnish a transcript and any other potential issue. The University is expected to release a statement on this soon and students are asked to be patient despite the tremendous amount of stress which this situation is casuing. Students with unique challenges stemming from this are asked to email such information to uwiguildsta@gmail so that it can be brought to the attention of the university. The Guild would continue to update you on this matter. Guild Council 2014 - 2015 Guild of Students The University of the West Indies St. Augustine 06.01.2015
