The Hannibal Outback trip gets back on the track.... We left Mt Dare refreshed and refueled. It was time to get back on the track to enjoy the Simpson and our trip across the French Line. The road to Dalhousie Ruins and Springs was heavily corrugated and rutted. Heaps of dust and lots of stones. There were also a number of other vehicles all doing the same thing and heading to the Simpson. The area which we are travelling through now is part of the Witjira National Park as always this area is steeped in history. The first Europeans were survey crewmen working on the Overland Telegraph Line in 1870. They named the Mound Springs Dalhouise. Pastoralists were quick to follow and Mount Dare station was established here in 1872. In the beginning sheep were grazed on the leases and later cattle. Bores were sunk in outlying areas. All that is left of Dalhousie homestead are the crumbling walls of stone. However, the date palms planted around it are still standing. There are also ruins of a shed, workmen’s quarters and blacksmith’s shop. Make sure if you come this way you stop in for a look and wander around to soak in the history. Dalhouise Springs.....Ive been here before and Im coming back. at around 28 degree C this water is fantastic. The last time I was here is was 12 degrees and blowing a gale but the water was great...only problem was we had to get out. We found another Hannibal owner. Chris Smith from Melbourne. He had been camping at Dalhouise when we found his tent he was no where to be seen. I expect he had gone down to the water for the afternoon swim and Dalhousie Goby skin cleaning. The Goby is a small fish around 30mms long. The day we were in the water there were 100s of them pecking away at us. Next post is the Simpson and the French Line.....
