The Haunting of the Borley Rectory- England Circa 1800s Probably the most famous haunting ever to take place in Britain. Just these 2 words themselves, Borley Rectory instantly sends a chill up the spine when one considers the frightening events that are alleged to have taken place at this location during the mid 1800s. We should start at the beginning. Legend has it that hundreds of years ago a young nun and a young Monk fell in love with one another, but alas- it was a forbidden love and so the couple tried to keep their affair a secret. However, unfortunately they were discovered and the pair would be severely punished for their so- called sins. The monk was hanged and the nun was to suffer a worse fate; being walled up in her convent where she starved to death. Eventually a rectory was built on the land where all of this took place, and immediately there were claims of it being haunted. Strange and unexplained activity took place regularly and when an investigator was asked to explore the goings on, he did so and kept very accurate records of what happened. At the time a young Reverend and his wife were living there, neither of them realized that one of the biggest paranormal encounters in history was to be documented in their home. The wife, Marianne Foyster, claimed that she began to find scratched markings and what looked like attempted writings on the walls all over the house. She would try and leave messages back but would only find more scratching. The Foyster children reported seeing what they thought was the ghost of a nun at twilight, about 40 feet from the house, in the garden and footsteps were heard all over the house day and night, even when the family were in the same room together. The family also reported a variety of incidents including the sounds of servant bells ringing -despite their being disconnected- lights appearing in windows and the sounds of disembodied voices at times. After learning about the demise of the poor nun, the investigator held a series of séances and, in one of these, he predicted that the house would eventually burn to the ground and reveal the remains of the wrongfully killed nun. Apparently, in 1944, the property burned to the ground and the remains of a young woman were found underneath.
