The Hawkesbury Regional Museum is opening its new FLOOD EXHIBIT on - TopicsExpress

The Hawkesbury Regional Museum is opening its new FLOOD EXHIBIT on SATURDAY 19th July at 1pm. I will be giving a talk called Boatmen to the Rescue - the heroic boatmen of the Upper Hawkesbury manning the floodboats during the great floods. The first volunteer water brigade in the country was formed here in Windsor in May 1869 after the devastating flood of 1867. Since then, thousands of rescues have been carried out, often under the most horendous conditions - rowing out into the night - four men on oars - an oil lamp to see their way - brave boatmen facing the fury of the Hawkesbury River in flood. The talk will be followed by the official opening by Clr Jill Reardon at 2pm. [Image of the Windsor No. 1 floodboat during the 1900 flood from the Australian Town & Country Journal 21July1900].
