The Heritage Page takes time today to Celebrate the 102nd Birthday of Thomas Edison Preston. Born on this day in Barton, Maryland in 1912, he was the 8th child of Charles David Ty Preston & Amy Ellen Metz. Like his brothers & sisters before and after him, he was raised with a love for life & family and an appreciation of nature and the world he lived in as well as a strong work ethic that served him throughout his lifetime. He married in 1937 and very shortly after left his boyhood home, along with it coal mines, and headed with his new bride Madeline Beeman to a brand new life in Northern Virginia. There he joined two of his older brothers to pursue a career in the roofing trade. It also afforded him time to continue his lifelong joy of playing baseball as he quickly found industrial league ball teams in the Washington area who were anxious and eager to have the young 2nd baseman in their lineups. Even some major league scouts thought his talents on the field might earn him a chance to play professionally someday and urged him to sign with a minor league team but family came first to him as it always did...any thought of a baseball career would have to wait. After renting places in Arlington & Fairfax for several years Tom, as he was known to friends and family, and Madeline, would soon purchase a home in the Falls Church area after he had earned enough money for the down payment by working every third shift during the building of the Pentagon. There they raised 6 children; Joyce Madeline, Bobby Thomas, Martin Edison, Jesse Ray, Rickey Lynn & Ronald Wayne along with an innumerable number of foster children. Happy Birthday Dad! Thank you for all you did and the sacrifices you made for us. You are still missed each & every day!
