The Hiding Place! Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. Psalm 32:7 This Psalm, written by David, is a song of deliverance from the bondage of sin. It begins with, “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” There are many words that were not in the original; it read, “Blessed transgression forgiven, sin covered.” Sin and transgression were the trouble of his heart, but his God had forgiven and covered them. Is sin and transgression also what pains your heart? Unconfessed and unforgiven sin causes a separation between the One we love and ourselves and finding no rest until reconciliation is made! “When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah” (Psalm 32:3-4). This was the thing that David could not endure, he must find peace; confession of his guilt to the offended party was the only possibility. David goes to his closet, “I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah” (Psalm 32:5). What a wonder! “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isaiah 1:18). As the Psalm continues in verse six, there is a separation because not everyone prays this way, “For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.” Do you see the separation? Only the godly pray for forgiveness. How can this be? Those that are not godly have no problem with their sins and transgressions. They do not grieve them. They do not need a hiding place or covering from them! When the Lord by His Spirit draws sinners, they begin to see the sinfulness of sin and their need of cleansing, instruction and guidance. They cannot continue on the path they are on, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” (Psalm 32:8). The only safety can be found in Him (God) alone through Jesus Christ and in His wounded side and pierced hands. It is in the blood of Jesus that all our sins are washed away. Do you need this hiding place? “How blest is he whose trespass hath freely been forgiv’n, whose sin is wholly covered before the sight of heav’n. Blest he to whom Jehovah imputeth not his sin, who hath a guileless spirit, whose heart is true within. While I kept guilty silence my strength was spent with grief, Thy hand was heavy on me, my soul found no relief; but when I owned my trespass, my sin hide not from Thee, when I confessed transgression, then Thou forgavest me. So let the Godly seek Thee in times when Thou art near; no whelming floods shall reach them, nor cause their hearts to fear. In Thee, O Lord, I hide me, Thou savest me from ill, and songs of Thy salvation my heart with rapture thrill.” Psalter 83 Written by Cornelius VanKempen August 10, 2012
