The Holland Tunnel is a dual-tube vehicular passageway located beneath the Hudson River. Completed in 1927, it was the first of its kind and revolutionized underwater tunnel construction. In 1993, it was designated a National Historic Landmark for outstanding achievement in the field of engineering. Built over the course of seven years, the tunnel connects New York City to New Jersey. It is named after Clifford Milburn Holland, the tunnel’s chief engineer who passed away unexpectedly in 1924. His successor, Ole Singstad, completed the project. Singstad is credited for inventing the tunnel’s innovative ventilation system, which ensured the safe passage of more than 16 million New York-bound commuter vehicles in 2013.
