The Holy Spirit High School Lady Spartans closed out the 20th - TopicsExpress

The Holy Spirit High School Lady Spartans closed out the 20th edition of the 97.3 ESPN Girls Basketball Shootout Sunday in fitting fashion: with a decisive victory on their home court. Natalie Neiderhofer (top photo) hit a 3-point shot to spark a 26-2 first-half run as the Spartans swamped rival Wildwood Catholic, 57-29. Neiderhofer finished with 15 points and four steals, and teammate Audrey Wilson scored 16 points, going 3-for-7 from 3-point range. The Spartans (9-2) turned up the defensive intensity, forcing 27 turnovers and beating the Crusaders on the boards, 44-25. Earlier Sunday at the Shootout, Little League sensation Mone Davis drew a huge crowd to the Holy Spirit gym for a game between her school, Springside-Chestnut Hill Academy (Pa.), and Timber Creek. Davis, who was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year after becoming the first female pitcher to win a game at the Little League World Series last summer, is the starting point guard as an eighth grader for Springside-Chestnut Hill. Her team lost to Timber Creek, 60-38, but Davis hit a couple 3-point shots, made some pretty passes, and brought a lot of fans and attention to the outstanding girls high school basketball on display at the Shootout - which is a very good thing. Well have much more on Holy Spirits victory as well as other Shootout results coming up at sports.shorenewstoday and the print editions of The Current.
