The Holy Spirit’s Pattern In the denial of biblical patterns, - TopicsExpress

The Holy Spirit’s Pattern In the denial of biblical patterns, it has been said that many cannot accept commands as authoritative since a “new hermeneutic” replaces commands with love. In the denial of biblical patterns, it has been said that many cannot accept apostolic examples as authority because we should “only do what Jesus did.” In the denial of biblical patterns, it has been said that many cannot accept a “necessary inference” because they are in opposition to “human inferences.” In the denial of biblical patterns, it has been said that many cannot accept the silence of the scriptures since “it doesn’t say not to do” a particular practice. In each of these instances, one thing is overlooked: the divine work of the Holy Spirit. Commands, apostolic examples, divine implications and the silence of scripture are part of the eternal work of the Spirit of God. Divine authority (not human opinion) underlies commands of the Bible. The Holy Spirit recorded, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). The Holy Spirit recorded the apostle Paul saying, “Imitate me just also as I imitate Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1). The Holy Spirit recorded cases of divine implications and condemned those who did not draw the necessary inferences: (Matt. 22:23-46). The Holy Spirit recorded the importance of the silence of the scriptures: “For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood” (Heb. 7:14). When any person seeks to add to, delete from, speak in the absence of, or change, the pattern of scripture, that person is fighting against the Holy Spirit of God. Would anyone really want to be a companion of Cain, Balaam, Nadab and Abihu, King Saul, Diotrephes or many others who made the mistake of violating the authority of the Holy Spirit? Such folks will learn, to their eternal sorrow, that none can break the authority of scripture. They can only break themselves against the Spirit of God. Tom M. Roberts [email protected]
