The Honor Code is a big part of the Hampden-Sydney College experience, but its influence does not stop at graduation. Russell Turner (H-SC ’92) is the head mens basketball coach at the University of California - Irvine. He was asked to speak during the Universitys series What Matters to Me and Why and he said, At Hampden-Sydney, where I went to college, there was an expectation of honor—honor and integrity—that has had a tremendous positive impact on me, on my life and on my career. Each week, I make my players now fill out an honor statement. We may have the only honor statement at UC - Irvine … They are rare now. [At Hampden-Sydney] you could be expelled for lying, cheating, or stealing. That threat drove home the importance of this core value, and I think we miss the mark in our society in promoting integrity.
