The Honourable Minister of Food Production, Senator Devant Maharaj, informed media representatives on Friday 4th April, 2014 that the Ministry of Food Production aims to supply 50% locally produced food to the school feeding programme by September 2014. Members of the Caroni Green Initiative (CGI) board were appointed to this task, and mandated to increase output to facilitate the drive. The Caroni Green Initiative, launched in June 2013, is a Caroni 1975 Ltd project that gives private farmers contracts to cultivate currently unused lands leased to former Caroni workers. The Initiative was created to increase local food production, lessen the food import bill and provide sustainable livelihoods for farmers. All CGI produce is distributed locally.
