Tanya is a past Hope Alliance trip participant and volunteer, traveling to Guatemala last February for a Vision Expedition. Read her story below! In February of 2014 I had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala with The Hope Alliance. While I may not be as well-traveled as many in this room, the one thing I have observed in the places I have journeyed remains consistent: The central needs each of us (should) have are all the same. We need food, shelter, education, medical attention, and love. Traveling with The Hope Alliance gave me the opportunity to offer two of those fundamental needs to over 1000 people in one week. It’s hard to tell in such moments “who” is serving “who.” Giving someone the gift of vision is a beautiful thing to witness, but we offered them a pair of glasses, and in return they gave us perspective, hope, and joy. I have found the parts of these journeys that stay with you forever is the parts that aligns themselves with love. For in those moments of service the struggles of the world are momentarily set aside. There is no racial inequality. No social disparity. No religious strife. Through the small act of serving another, I suppose a higher power must be present - for we are allowed to love and see each other as HE loves and see us in that moment. Often, at the end of a long day of work, I ponder solid objectives as an educator – especially amidst the changing philosophies in education. Regardless of these paradigm shifts my thoughts consistently lead me back to these residual feelings: I teach to try and make a difference. I teach because I want to see the world be responsible, confident, compassionate, and loving. However, our most important moments come when we are granted the opportunity to lead by example. For if we want to make the world a better place we must first start by doing it ourselves. -Tanya Taylor
