Guru Arjun Dev Ji and later Guru Hargobind Sahib baptised the successive descendants of the family, i.e. Sindhu and Rup Chand. In recognition of the services of Rup Chand in the Sikh cause, Guru Hargobind named him as his own brother and bestowed on him the benediction of langer, a free kitchen, which to this day feeds the poor and those who visit the place. Thus came into use the family name ‘Bhaika’. This benevolence was further graced when the last Guru, ordained that the descendants of the family would be considered as his descendants. Two of the brothers from the Bagrian family had accompanied Guru Gobind Singh to Nanded Sahib. Sir Lepel Griffin in his book, ‘Chiefs and Families of Note’ records that the house of Bagrian has been a beacon of spiritual light to the Sikh ruling princes and the Sikhs in general.Sir Lepel Griffin in his book, ‘Chiefs and Families of Note’ records that the house of Bagrian has been a beacon of spiritual light to the Sikh ruling princes and the Sikhs in general." ~ Brig. Harwant Singh, The House of Bagrian, Article in The Tribune, Chandigarh, India, Monday, 20 Sept., 1999 Read more about the book here: Another of the breed is Simar Onkar. Owner of the bookstore Great Books (Sec 34 A, Chandigarh), collecting rare books he says was his "childhood disorder" that got converted into a business. “My collection is over 300 books and it has special editions, limited editions, first editions, books only for private circulation, books which are out of print now et al. My first significant first editions include Principles of Psychology by William James printed in 1890. It was a single edition book with two volumes,” he says. His most prized possession is a pictorial book, The House of Bagrian, printed in 1939. “The pictures in the book don’t have any negatives or prints in existence, they are exclusive to the book.” he adds. Limited Edition by Neha Walia, The Tribune, 23 Dec., 2009 tribuneindia/2009/20091223/ttlife1.htm "I have been collecting all sorts of books. In the process I came across books which were rare and unique and I collected quite a few of them. The mission took off from that point. Visits to all over the country to meet such collectors (though there are only a few) and rummaging through people’s attics and junks to search for the rarest of the rare. Like this House of Bagrian which was about to be sold off to a raddiwala at Simar’s ancestral house in Gwalior. He intervened just in time and later restored it page by page. Now this is one of the rarest books he has with its price going up to lakhs. "This book was printed sometime around 1940 by Lion Press in Lahore. It comes under the rare book category as there are only a few copies in existence," says Simar. The book with beautiful pictures of the Bagrian family traces its lineage even beyond Guru Gobind Singh’s period. It has 38 plates of rare photographs.
