The Hoyleton Grade School Board of Education met last Thursday - TopicsExpress

The Hoyleton Grade School Board of Education met last Thursday night. Superintendent Elaine Hemker said they had a public hearing on the Amended Budget, which was later passed in the meeting. She said they had deficits of approximately $3,000 in Education, $1,000 in Operations & Maintenance and $4,000 in Transportation. The Education deficit is due mostly with the inclusion of a student moving into the district with Special Educational needs. This can drastically increase expenses. Also, it can affect busing as well as they did not receive all the funds they had expected from the state to help pay for transportation. They also had building issues last summer that created a deficit in maintenance. Also, the Board renewed their insurance with Prairie State Insurance Cooperative for the upcoming school year, but it did go up $300, but they were able to find other areas to alleviate that $300, so Hemker says it was basically the same as the previous year. The Board approved of Hemker applying for a $5,000 IEMA Security Grant, which if they receive, they would put towards a buzzer system to allow people into the school. They tabled any discussion about possible changes to the Student Handbook, as they would like more input on what other schools use for their primary grading scales, especially for kindergarten through 2nd grade. Support staff raises were approved, but they varied in amounts, depending on the position. She also said the Board officers were elected and there were no changes to report there. There was no report from Dr. Nick Osborne on the feasibility study on the status of Hoyleton Grade School and if it might be best to merge with Nashville Grade School. The Board wants to set a meeting with him to find out the progress so far this summer. His full report isn’t expected until September to both schools.
