The Huffington Post, one of America’s most respected online news portals, recently ran a story on rich world leaders. One entry in the list leaped out at us – Sonia Gandhi. HuffPo says she’s worth 2 billion dollars, and everyone’s wondering how. Some have guesses that may or may not involve the words ‘Bofors’, ’2G’ and ‘Coalgate’.But we know the true sources. Here are some of the ways she could legitimately have earned 2 billion dollars. Her children worked hard to earn it for her Priyanka Gandhi is most famous for having short hair, and most infamous for marrying Robert Vadra. Rahul Gandhi is – Rahul Gandhi. Both these jewels of India could easily have earned a billion dollars each through innovation and entrepreneurship. Yup – that’s what must have happened, and then they brought it all home to mummy. She worked a day job Why do we assume Sonia Gandhi didn’t earn her billions the way most people earn money – through a monthly salary? Well, probably because earning USD 2 billion on a waitress’ salary in India would take approximately 5 lakh years, and human’s don’t live beyond 120. She gave Hindi classesIn a country that had to put up with faltering Hindi orators like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Sonia Gandhi is king. Her knowledge of Hindi puts all us ethnic Indians to shame. If she started giving Hindi classes, surely she could earn 2 billion dollars easily? Manmohan Singh earned it for herBefore the current UPA government’s tenure, MMS was indubitably one of the greatest economists in the world. He had a glittering resume, impeccable credentials, and proven impact. He could easily have earned hundreds of millions of dollars as a high powered macro-economic consultant. Maybe he did. Maybe he earned 2 billion dollars and gave it all to Sonia Gandhi. After all, masters own their robots’ earnings in every sci-fi movie we’ve ever seen. Rajiv Gandhi’s life insurance policy paid off really wellBut, after doing the calculations, we realized he’d have had to die in 1991 BC instead of 1991 AD for the insurance payout to reach that much. The money came through donationsAAP thinks they did something great by getting INR 20 crore in 2013, through donations alone. What if Sonia got INR 10,000 crore before 2013 in the same way? After all, she is loved by so many people that we would all gladly donate. She won a lotteryOne might scoff at the idea of a high powered politician even buying a lottery ticket, but maybe this is what happened after all, on an abstract level. Think of it – born in Italy, into a middle class family, she met the most powerful man in India, married him, bore his children, and became the remote controller of India against all odds or logic. Winning a lottery is much more probable. ( I am not the author of this piece ...sadly !!! )
