The Humane Society of Columbiana County is once again reminding pet owners of winter weather advisory precautions. Frigid temperatures remain in the forecast and the danger to our animals continues! We urge owners of outside animals to bring them into the house, basement, garage or shed if possible. If you are unable to make accommodations for your pet to have indoor shelter, you need to provide the animal with adequate housing, food and water. What is needed in this weather is boxes stuffed full of dry straw. A thick plastic or waterproof burlap flap over the door opening provides a windbreak. Pets also need double the food. During cold weather, it takes more energy to keep the core of the body warm. Fresh, unfrozen water needs to be available. Owners must make several trips outside if the animal does not have a heated bowl. We are not only talking about cats and dogs, agricultural life also need additional calories to maintain warmth, unfrozen water and at least a windbreak are also required. If you need assistance with straw, please call The Animal Resource Complex in Salem at 330.332.8622 or to report Animal Cruelty or Neglect call our Humane Hotline at 330.831.2613. When calling in a concern, please leave street address, city and reason for calling. Failure to provide this information may result in a delay or inability to respond to the concern. Due to high volume of calls and limited agent staff, return phone requests are not guaranteed.
