The Hungry Thief Friday, January 23 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6 Recommended Reading Matthew 5:1-10 Last fall, a homeowner in Rockland, Massachusetts, was awakened at 1:30 a.m. by sounds in his kitchen. After calling the police, he went to investigate himself. An intruder was cooking corn on the cob. The two men got into a scuffle, but police officers arrived in time to arrest the thief before anyone was hurt. What happened to the corn wasn’t reported. Everyone knows what it’s like to be hungry. We have stomach pains, feel weak and famished, and crave our favorite foods. But how is our spiritual appetite? Do we ever feel spiritual hunger pains? Jesus told us we should be hungry and thirsty every day—that we should crave righteousness. But this might not come naturally; it’s an acquired taste. Like a child learning to like a new food, let’s begin tasting what God desires for us. Turn away from sin; give up spiritual junk food. Start reading your Bible more, living it out, and practicing the Spirit-filled life. Soon you’ll notice if you miss a day of conscious fellowship with the Lord. That’s when you’ll discover that a good spiritual appetite is a blessing. A good, healthy, natural or spiritual appetite is a gift of God, and something for which to be grateful.
