The Hyperkin RetroN 3 is a hardware clone that is capable of playing games from 3 different generations of consoles: the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis. It comes in Vector Red and Metallic Grey. One of the greatest advantages of the RetroN 3 is that it supports the original controllers for all three systems. One little annoyance is that the Hyperkin decided to place the controller slots for each system on a different side, so it is a bit of a hassle fitting it into a entertainment cabinet. This, though, is an annoyance we can put up with if it means the end to crappy proprietary controllers. Speaking of crappy controllers, don’t rely on the included infrared wireless controllers because they are unreliable and just poorly executed. It requires you to point the controller directly at the system, and seems to have a lag in its response time. The controllers take their design cues from the 6-button Sega Genesis controller. In order to switch between the three consoles, there is a radial dial. There are spots labeled for the NES, SNES, and Genesis. Strangely there is an unlabeled fourth position that the dial can click to, but it has no apparent function. The SNES and Sega Genesis cartridge slots also fit the Japanese Super Famicom and Mega Drive cartridges. The system has a NTSC and NTSC-J switch, so this is your chance if you’ve ever wanted to tap into the multitude of games that never made it to the US. The system supports S-Video output (cable is included) for the Sega Genesis and the SNES, but the NES portion only supports Composite output (cable also included). As far as compatibility goes, the NES portion is similar to other Nintendo-On-A-Chip clones, there are certain games that are notorious for not being supported. Please read NES Clone & Famiclone Compatibility Explained for more information. Unlike the NES portion which has its inherent compatibility issues, the SNES and Sega Genesis portions show great game compatibility and look good. The SNES portion is near perfect while the Sega Genesis games have slight sound issues such as the volume being either too high or too low. All in all, this is a powerhouse of a system. It plays three generations of games, has support for each generation’s controllers, and it has support for the Japanese counterparts of the SNES and Sega Genesis (Super Famicom and Mega Drive). It is hard to deny the suite of features the RetroN 3 has, and it’s hard not to recommend this for anyone who would like a 3-in-1 retro gaming machine.
