The IITC was actively involved in developing the Minamata Convention, an international legally-binding Treaty to eliminate mercury contamination which was finalized in January 2013 after five years of negotiations. On November 7th, 2013, the US became the first country to ratify the Convention, which needs to be ratified by 50 countries or “State parties” to go into legal force.
