The IRS investigation is turning up more interesting - TopicsExpress

The IRS investigation is turning up more interesting documentation, and the latest could mean that Cummings may end up in more than just hot water. Emails show that Cummings, an opponent of the conservative group, True the Vote (“TTV”), a group working against voter fraud, used his office to ask the IRS for “dirt” on the group. The group was working on getting 501c3 tax status, and after Cummings sent his email, the IRS sent TTV demanding letters using nearly identical language as was found in Cummings emails. Lois Lerner corresponded with Cummings about the TTV status and may have been involved in leaking their tax returns to him. TTV was one of the groups targeted by Lerner and the IRS. Their request to be considered a 501c3 organization led to TTV being subjected to years of scrutiny. Many right leaning or Tea Party groups were subjected to the same treatment, while liberal groups’ applications sailed through the process in weeks. Cummings made TTV his pet project. TTV made headlines and attracted the liberal’s negative attention because their demand was that states work to purge dead and ineligible voters from their rolls. They support a national voter-ID requirement and showing ID to vote. This is a deal breaker for most liberal Democrats, especially Cummings. Cummings emails came to the attention of Darrel Issa last week. Given the amount of stonewalling about email communications and “the dog ate my hard drive” from the IRS it’s amazing they got this much! Issa released a statement that said Cummings “made numerous requests for virtually identical information from true the Vote, raising concerns that the IRS improperly shared protected taxpayer information with Rep. Cummings’ staff.” Because, you know, the IRS never does that! They didn’t have to pay $50,000 to another group after releasing protected taxpayer information.. oh wait, they did! Cummings sent specific demands to Lerner asking for TTV to provide “copies of all training materials used for volunteers, affiliates, or other entities.” 5 days later the IRS send a demand email to TTV demanding “a copy of your volunteer registration form … the process you use to assign volunteers … how you keep your volunteers in teams,” and “how your volunteers are deployed … following the training they receive by you.” Lerner personally followed up on whether the information was provided or not. Three days after doing so, TTV’s tax returns ended up in Cummings possession, and he never shared them with Republicans on the committee, something he was required to do. One year later, Cummings denied the whole thing during a committee hearing.
