The ISIS is taking over Iraq and laying waste to any claim that we handed off power to there to a competent civilian administration through nation-building. Now, we are supposed to believe the same narrative about Afghanistan- a nation that has been at war longer (on a scale of decades) and has had nothing resembling a functional government since the 1970s due to its position as a Cold War sparring ground between the US and USSR and subsequent descent into ethnic, religious, and familial conflict and warlord fiefdoms. We are meant to believe that we have set up a democratic government there to which we will hand off power, guarded by a US-trained security force, to stabilize the country while we withdraw. In fact, we have established a corruption-ridden, warlord-infested, nepotistic shell of a state barely capable of performing basic civic functions, guarded by an unmotivated, unprofessional force that routinely sees mass desertions to the Taliban, the selling of its own equipment to its opposition, and wanton abuse of the population it is allegedly meant to protect.
