The Iguala scandal has engulfed the entire Mexican political class. It has also raised larger questions about where the country has been in the last few decades and where it’s going. As students, writes Thomas Rath, the victims have tremendous symbolic heft in Mexico. Recalling the government’s 1968 massacre of dozens (maybe hundreds) of protesting students, one has to wonder whether Mexico has been going in historical circles.
