The Imitation Game - A mesmerisingly good film, that makes its subject matter feel very fresh; usually WW2 films tend to be a bit samey, especially post-Saving Private Ryan. While one can feel a bit of influence of films like Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy in this film, it is still very much its own thing. It is as equally funny (some of Turings dialogue and actions could easily have been written for Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory) as it is sad and I could feel that the whole audience in the cinema was completely with the film from start to finish. Benedict Cumberbatch delivers one of the finest and most heartbreaking performances of the year, the rest of the cast also play their roles very well indeed; Charles Dance and Mark Strong deserve special mention for their work. The faults of the film lie in the sequences of actual war, which look more like they have been removed from a computer game. While the technical aspects of Turings work would go over most peoples heads (it certainly did mine) the film makes it work by not getting bogged down in such unnecessary details. The film is very well edited, it jumps between 3 different time zones and it works very well, and certainly it wouldnt have worked very well if it were edited in a linear way. I would not be surprised if you hear of this film again come awards season; its a film that is not only very timely, but is also extremely well made and tells the story of a small group of un-sung war heroes who no doubt saved millions of lives. https://youtube/watch?v=eWq5wAX8K8A
