The Incredible Dogs of war (Bill Bradshaw - FFC ) On April 4th at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Carl Frampton (17-0-0 with 12KOs) will take on Mexican tough guy Hugo Fidel Cavares (40-7-2 with 27KOs). The bout is an official final eliminator for the WBC Super Bantamweight title presently held by Leo Santa Cruz. For anyone who thinks this is merely a stepping stone for the Irishman, its worth remembering that Cavares (El Incredible) is ranked number 1 contender by the boxing council and has held the NABO Light Flyweight Title, WBO Light Flyweight Title, WBA World Super Flyweight Title, WBC Carribean Super Bantamweight Title and he presently holds WBC International Silver Super Bantamweight Title. Frampton (The Jackal) is the councils number 2 contender and, in a mere 17 pro fights, has collected the Celtic Super Bantamweight Title, Commonwealth Super Bantamweight Title, EBU Super Bantamweight Title and is currently the IBF Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight Champion. So..theres the credentials out of the way and, on paper, this should be a great fight. At 35, Cavares is giving 9yrs away to his younger opponent and this may be telling in the later rounds. Frampton is a natural at the weight and, in time, may sit comfortably at Feather. With Cavares the natural Flyweight, Framptons power and, in particular, his stinging bodyshots may take their toll on the Sinaloa southpaw. The Mexicans experience will be called upon from the first bell and if Framptons lack of big fight experience is a weakness, we certainly havent seen it to date. He systematically broke up Kiko Martinez, stopping him in 9, and was then forced to stand back and watch the IBF sanction a title shot for the badly beaten Martinez...which he won and refuses to defend against Frampton. Worse again, the US media dismissed the whole affair by describing Kiko as coming from obscurity to win the title having previously lost to Englands Carl Frampton. Kiko Martinez has been regarded as the biggest punching small guy on the planet...yes...the most dangerous super bantam on the planet..yes..a hurricane...yes...Obscure..certainly not. Im not an Irishman who objects to our good neighbors in the UK, quiet the contrary, but Frampton is from Belfast and if US journalists cant find it on the map,try googling it before you go to press...no apple for the editor on that cock-up either. I think The Jackal will be too dogged, too young and too strong for Cavares but, having only been stopped twice in an illustrious career, El Incredible will drag Frampton into the later rounds before Barry McGuigan and Co can breathe a sigh of relief.
