The India I know is one of pictures, spices, dolls and fusion - TopicsExpress

The India I know is one of pictures, spices, dolls and fusion music... I have never been, but have treasured pictures in books my whole life, especially the books that my mom bought for me as a kid, and the photographs my dad took on his business trips around India. In addition to these things I also grew up around Punjabi kids (very few), but I had Punjabi friends in school and they took me to their gudwaras way out on the edge of town on farms, for a couple of Sunday mornings and they showed me how to wear lengas and saris. Punjabi symbols can be seen on signs marking farm land along the interstate North from Bakersfield and I have always been intrigued. Unfortunately, Ive read about hate crimes towards Indian farm owners in the San Joaquin, and in my hometown where fires were set to gudwaras and local Indian mosques and Hindu temples. I think it is important to remember that Sikh families are very similar to Christian American families. They are monotheistic, they go to church on Sunday mornings, they tend to be quite conservative and they are responsible for the production of 95% of the peach farming, 60% of the prune farming, 20% almonds & walnuts, and in the Bakersfield & Fresno area 20% of the table grapes are grown by Sikh farmers. This in addition to being pioneers of the lumber mills since the 1800s, all while overcoming resistance and descrimination in Canada and the U.S. merely for being eccentric dressers. vimeo/54127535
