The Indiana Cancer Consortium Recognizes Indiana’s Cancer Registrars INDIANAPOLIS, IN —This week has been designated by the Governor as Cancer Registrar’s Week. The Indiana Cancer Consortium (ICC) recognizes the important role cancer registrars play in reducing the state’s cancer burden. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Indiana and the United States. “Approximately two out of every five Hoosiers will eventually develop cancer,” said Sara Edgerton, ICC Steering Committee Co-Chair. “The data certified tumor registrars collect and report throughout the year allows for better decisions in terms of targeting resources and cancer control efforts.” The data collected by cancer registrars lay the groundwork for cancer control in Indiana and provide valuable information for the ICC to produce publications such as the Indiana Cancer Control Plan 2010-2014 and the Indiana Cancer Facts and Figures 2012 report, as well as various other reports, fact sheets, and infographics. “Accurate data is critical to cancer control successes,” said Stephen D. Tharp, M.D., ICC Steering Committee Co-Chair. “The ICC is grateful for the dedication and hard work of cancer registrars.” To learn more about cancer in Indiana, please refer to the Indiana Cancer Facts and Figures 2012, a comprehensive report on the burden of cancer in Indiana indianacancer.org/. Participation in the ICC is open to all organizations and individuals interested in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, quality of life, data collection and advocacy regarding cancer-related issues.
