The Indonesian Government is considering stopping the practice of allowing their nationals to go and work overseas as maids. The changes could come into effect from 2019. The proposed change is in relation to the large number of cases where maids are abused physically and mentally while overseas. The Jakarta Globe reported that the Indonesian Vice President, Jusuf Kalla had said explained these plans last Friday. If the decision goes ahead, Singaporeans may see a shortage of maids as Indonesians make up about 70% of the 200,000 domestic helpers working here currently. Local maid agencies here said that they are aware of the development and it is worrying as it will heavily impact their operations. Indonesians are a popular choice as many of the maids from Indonesia are trained in English before they arrive. For employers who can speak Malay, it is also attractive as Bahasa Indonesia is similar. Even now, Singapore faces a slight shortage of domestic workers as many maids prefer to work in other, higher-paying countries like Hong Kong and Taiwan as long as their language skills permit it. Singapore has begun to bring in maids from Cambodia but despite the attempt, there have been fewer than expected Cambodians signing up to be maids here. If Indonesia goes ahead with the ban, Singapore families wanting to employ maids may see shortages and possible price increases as demand outpaces supply. therealsingapore/content/indonesia-may-stop-sending-maids-overseas-2019
