The Institute of Mental and Neuro-Sciences, Bangalore, held an important, if little publicised, workshop to probe the possible existence of a fourth factor in human personality, beyond the body, the life-force and the mind, which could be relevant to the issue of health. The consensus arrived at by the participants—some of the leading psychologists, psychiatrists, neuro-surgeons, physicians, educationists, students of mysticism (including this author) and scholars belonging to a few other disciplines in India—was that such a factor did indeed exist and they called it Factor X. To call it by any other term involved the risk of sounding unacademic, but since times immemorial the Indian mystic tradition had called it the soul—that occult dimension of our being, by knowing which, as the Upanishads assert, one knows all. (As Shri Manoj Das is now at Bangalore, I thought of posting this paragraph from an article which he had written after participating in a seminar at the Institute of Mental and Neuro-Sciences, Bangalore years back.)
