The Iranian regime wont even allow the dead to rest in peace. Despite international pressure and without a permit, the Revolutionary Guards are destroying the burial site of ten Bahai women who were hanged in 1983 because of their faith. This cemetery has historical and spiritual importance for the Bahais. We will never forget Mona Mahmudnizhad who was executed as a teenager for teaching children Sunday school classes. This month marks the sixth anniversary of the imprisonment of the Yaran (Iran’s Baha’i leadership) who were arrested on trumped up charges including “espionage for Israel,” “insulting religious sanctities,” and “propaganda against the system. Regular Bahais are persecuted on a daily basis by regime officials. They are denied access to higher education, banned from certain jobs, their properties are ransacked and confiscated and they have been imprisoned and tortured in order to denounce others in the faith and extract false confessions. On a brighter note, the Mothers of Khavaran who have been fighting for decades to shed light on the secret executions of their family members by the regime during the chain murders where thousands of Iranians were executed, have just received the 2014 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights. May the buried Bahais and other prisoners of conscience rest in peace and may the ones that are alive and well live in peace and freedom. thestar/opinion/commentary/2014/05/12/iranian_regime_still_fears_girl_hanged_30_years_ago.html
