The Irish philosopher George Berkeley once proposed that the only objects that exist r things that r perceived, since, without perception of sum kind, there would b no evidence 4 their existence. The notion was hard 2 swallow, & seemed 2 imply that whenever we turn our backs, everything bhind us pops out of existence. A skeptical philosophy student @ Oxford University, according 2 Ronald Knox, expressed his disbelief n a limerick that he tacked 2 a tree on campus : There was a young man who said, God must think its exceedingly odd If he finds that this tree; Continues to be; When theres no one about n the Quad. But Berkeleys philosophy provides an easy explanation which was found tacked 2 the same tree the next day : Dear Sir: Your astonishments odd. I am always about in the Quad.
