The Islamic Development Bank has donated US$4 million to fund a strategic plan to boost urbanization in Sudan: The Minister of Environment, Forests and Urbanization Development Hassan Hilal announced the plans during a joint meeting with Urbanization Development and National Human Settlement commissions at the Friendship Hall in Khartoum yesterday. During his address, Hassan Abdulgader Hilal stressed the importance of boosting urbanization projects across Sudan. “The majority of the world’s populations tend to live in cities,” said Hilal, pointing out the importance of modern cities as centers of cultural, social and economic interaction. He highlighted the challenges resultant from fast urbanization, calling for integrated efforts to address the negative effects. For his part, Head of the National Council of Urbanization Development Sayed Abdu Al-Rasoul said the report prepared by the council on the development of urbanization process in Sudan stresses the effort carried out by concerned parties to apply the decision of the 1996 Habitat II conference in Istanbul. He asserted that Sudan has already fulfilled its obligations towards the standards of urbanization assigned by Istanbul conference. Source: Sudan Vision Daily
