The Israeli narrative about the shooting of Jewish extremist Yehuda Glick raises many questions and doubts. Yet it fits perfectly within a scenario sketched out by Glick himself that a spectacular act of violence targeting Jews would help bring forward his yearned for goal: the replacement of Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque with a Jewish “Third Temple.” The stakes could not be higher as Jewish extremists, including Glick, backed by the Israeli government are actively planning to turn this messianic scheme into reality. Escalating violence and confrontation is an essential part of their plan. If they are successful, the violence that could engulf the region could be even more catastrophic than the present situation. One supporter of plans to build the Temple has predicted a “world war.”
