The Itelmens are one of the smallest indigenous peoples in the world. There are 3,193 Itelmen living in Russia today, called the Indians of Russia. The Itelmens are the most ancient people of Kamchatka, the large peninsula in the Russian Far East. The oldest Itelmens settlements discovered by archaeologists show that there were already Itelmens living in Kamchatka some 15,000 years ago with main occupation of the Itelmens since ancient times being fishing, mostly salmon and smelt fishing. Until Russians came, Itelmens lived in a world of plentiful resources and much of their time was spent on what Russian visitors described as idle activities and Itelments needed to be rescued from a condition of savage misery. ButItelmens just wanted to have fun and were convinced that there was no way of life happier and more agreeable than their own. Now there are only a few people still alive who can speak it. The main language of communication is now Russian. In this video you can hear their throat singing and throat croaking similar to that of Inuits
