The JATONET program works to aid large populations of poor and developing countries by successfully designing and constructing solutions to their problems. Our class was assigned to develop a low-cost cooking system that is safe to the environment because it is estimated that the greatest health risk to women and children in Kenya is caused by smoke inhalation from indoor cooking. In order to create a product that is affordable to people who live of a $2 per day income and successfully reduces emissions, we have designed the stove with a pipe filtering system. By using inexpensive yet sustainable materials to make our product, families in Kenya will be able to purchase this cooking system and successfully feed the family without having to worry as much about their women and children inhaling emissions.
