* The JAYSUS WEPT AWARD (Weekend 27/10/2013) * I am not a wealthy man. I am self-employed, running a drop and go van service for local businesses. Six or seven years ago, I would have made an average wage, and the freedom of my time being my own made it an enjoyable occupation. Nowadays, things are not at all busy, and most weeks I am lucky to cover my costs. I am blessed with not having a mortgage, because if I did I would most likely be on the streets now. Like most of you, a night out is a luxury, a holiday an impossibility, the thought of Christmas a financial nightmare. However, I am healthy thank God, and with what I earn, I can afford to feed myself and keep my home in running order. I am very aware that I am one of the lucky ones, and I am extremely thankful for that. You see, when you are driving about during the day, as I am, you get to see and hear about the real hardships being endured by what I can only call brave people. I see mothers and fathers making sacrifices for their children, trying to create brighter futures for them, trying to instil hope in their hearts and give them courage in a country gone mad. Genuinely, I would be a great deal better off on social welfare. I say this with hand on heart. It is a fact. So why do I not just fold up the little business and place myself at the mercy of Social Protection then? Because I WANT to work, and the fact that I earn less than I would most likely would receive on the dole is not an issue here. I am working, and it keeps me sane for the most part. The vast majority of us WANT to work, and we will work at anything if we can get it. We need our dignity. We want to feel self-worth. My heart goes out to those who have either, through no fault of their own, lost their jobs or have been UNABLE to find a first job. For those who actually do not WANT to work, but would prefer to spend their lives with their hands in the taxpayers pockets, sorry; I have no interest in you. I make absolutely no apology for this statement, and anyone who wishes can call me anything they wish. I see real hardship on a daily basis on my travels, and hardship does not mean standing in the doorway of the pub at noon, with a smoke in one hand and an IPhone 5S in the other. And so to this weeks JAYSUS WEPT AWARD! Barbara Murray is a regular contributor to this Page, and earlier in the week she nominated Glen Dimplex CEO and chairman, Sean ODriscoll, for the Award. Sean, who most likely earns a fortune (and fair play to him for that), in his work seems to think that this government should stop paying cash to people who have lost jobs or cannot find work, but instead hand them vouchers for items that he sees as life essentials for them. Isnt it wonderful how the filthy rich and the political gurus in Ireland have the knowledge and self-belief to tell the poor how to live their lives? What a wonderful Nanny State we lie in! From the piece in the Irish Independent: * People in receipt of social welfare payments could be issued with special payment cards by the Department of Social Protection to use for the purchase of food and other essentials, rather than having cash credited to their bank accounts – if a radical proposal made by a leading businessman at the Global Irish Economic Forum finds favour with Government. Glen Dimplex CEO and chairman Sean ODriscoll told the gathering of business leaders that the use of the cards could help the State curb the current multimillion euro loss the Exchequer is suffering through the outflow of welfare payments to bogus claimants both here and abroad. The Sunday Independent understands that Mr ODriscolls suggestion was well received by a number of the forums participants, and that it will now be forwarded to the Department of Social Protection for consideration.* Theres even a picture of the man himself, firmly shaking the hand of Leslie Buckley, chairman of INM, both looking as smug as can be in their finely tailored suits, while they pronounce judgement on those disgusting peasants in Third World Ireland. Once again, the rich have the solution to the problem of the poorer class. Once again the buddies of Enda and his FG oligarchs have come up trumps. Not really! Sorry Sean! You are just another wannabe Fine Gael style wanker with your finger on the wrong pulse. How dare you! Thank you, Barbara Murray, for your nomination for this weeks Award. Well spotted and well done. :) Without further ado, allow me to present the JAYSUS WEPT AWARD for this weekend to Sean ODriscoll for his suggestions of how to control to problem of the Poorer Class in Ireland. Take a bow, Sean! May your tongue never fester from kissing Political Arse! *Jaysus Wept!*
