The JOURNEY - Psalm 71:20 - Trouble - We hate trouble when it hits us, when we get in to it and when we have to face it. Trouble is the part of life that we try to avoid and hide from. Trouble is what we hate to see others go through but hate to go through even more ourselves. In church, when we know the sermon is going to be on Troubled Times, we are very interested in hearing about them but we dont want to think about them much less face the reality of them. The reason I like this Psalm is because its unclear who the author is. It could have been someone like you or me. You really have to read the whole Psalm to understand where its going. Its really a testimony to the test the Psalmist has gone through or is going through. What trouble has are you going through? Whats troubling you? What are in trouble for? You really need to read this in its true light. Its really saying this The Lord is making me look at trouble in the face but He will restore me, life me up and give me my life back again. The way to be restored and get your life back comes through looking trouble in the face. Have you ever been forced to look at someone? Remember when you were in trouble and your parent said Look at me when Im talking to you!? You were being forced to face your trouble. Or maybe when there was a trouble that you absolutely could not avoid and were forced to face it. A hurt friend or an unpleasant run in with someone. Trouble happens to us or from us and no matter who we are, at some point, trouble will come one of these two ways. It will either be thrown at us or from us but trouble will happen. Fortunately, when trouble happens, our God is always there to get us out of trouble if were willing to face the trouble. Some advice - Dont run from trouble! The Psalmist clearly states that if we, with Gods help, will stare trouble in the face and deal with it then it wont be able to deal with us. The thing about trouble is that the more you avoid it, the worse it becomes. The bigger it gets. The more it increases. Read and look what happens when we face it though - trouble isnt so big after all when God is standing behind us. Its like the playground bully chasing us until he sees the teacher. Trouble is the same way. When trouble is comes, find the teacher and let the teacher stand behind you. We can only stare trouble in the face when the teacher is also staring trouble in the face. We can never take on trouble on our own. We need help. Jesus took on trouble so we could endure trouble. I like what Thomas Paine said - If there must be trouble, let be in my day, that my child may have peace. We know why he wrote that but do you know why Jesus had to take on trouble? So His children could have peace. Not peace from trouble but peace when you go through trouble. Whatever trouble youre facing today - you can face with God. Just dont try to run from it. Look it in the face; watch how God gets you out and overcome it.
