The Japanese consulate in Miami is actually *asking* (!!) for letters to take to the Powers That Be. It is promised that these will be read. Please write to: [email protected] ***IF you are sending any messages and tweets today to media, government officials, or celebrities, *please remember to include in your message, the suggestion of transitioning to Eco Tourism, Izumi Ishii and his upcoming trip to Taiji on Feb. 5-7 and request media coverage for his trip. (Suggestions of what to write below) Please also read the following articles, and consider sharing in your message. (The first two are especially good.): takepart/article/2012/08/30/poster-child-hope-izumi-ishii-former-japanese-hunter-turned-dolphin-advocate dolphinproject.org/blog/post/support-mr.-ishii-and-his-efforts-to-help-dolphins digitaljournal/article/343861#ixzz2rRmUcK9N bluevoice.org/news_dolphinwatching.php SUGGESTIONS OF WHAT TO MENTION: -The dolphin- and whale-watching business is sustainable. By contrast, if they keep hunting dolphins, they finally kill off the local dolphin population. - Shifting their career to the dolphin-watching business does not cost much. They can use their current boat just like Ishii-san did. (It is possible a grant could be created to help support additional cost of this project) - When the hunters become old (as many of them are), their hunts will become too physically tough to continue, but they can do the watching business and earn money for long term. ~Izumi Ishiis transformation from dolphin hunter to dolphin tour operator makes him more money than his previous business and has taken thousands of Japanese to see whales and dolphins. It shows that dolphin watching can replace dolphin killing. Hashtags to include if you are tweeting: #HelpCoveDolphins #HelpDolphinsWAZA #Tweet4Dolphins #Tweet4Taiji More ideas/sample letter of what to write when commenting to any news source asking them to cover this issue: I would like to ask you to please please share a story that gives a true account of the situation in Taiji, Japan. There is enormous interest in this issue worldwide, and the number of people that are really passionate on standing against the unspeakably brutal slaughter is truly astounding. Are you aware however, that this is a very very serious issue of human health as well, posing a great danger to the health and lives of the Japanese citizens? Dolphin and whale meat have been shown time and time again, by even the most lax of standards to be far, far above the safe levels for human consumption in Mercury and Methylmercury. The verification of these levels cannot be denied. Even the Taiji officials themselves have declared Dolphin and Whale meat to be nothing less than “TOXIC WASTE” … This side of the story is not often mentioned. Please see the following article from the Japan times about this: japantimes.co.jp/.../taiji-officials-dolphin.../ This meat is being pushed upon the Japanese population and others by the various industries themselves. The fact is Mercury is one of the most dangerous toxins out there, contributing enormously to birth defects, brain damage, mental retardation, cancer, and a whole host of other diseases, and even DEATH. The lives of the Japanese, and any others who consume this meat, unaware of the devastating health effects, are in serious danger, including the countless Japanese children and babies who are even more susceptible to mental disabilities and birth defects. The situation for some time has been that there is a very significant excess of meat left over as people now generally understand the danger involved, or honestly have no interest in eating Cetacean meat. It is not a popular or profitable business. This meat ends up being used as a filler in pet food. Mercury has understandably, been shown to be a serious danger to dogs, cats and other animals, greatly contributing to the development of Cancer and many other diseases. So even pets are hurt as a result of these practices. The other reason, which is in fact even more of a driving cause behind these slaughters then the use of Cetacean meat, is the Marine Park and Aquarium industry. Shockingly, these organizations, contribute enormously to these slaughters by working hand in hand with those who hunt Cetaceans, buying animals from them, as the cheapest and most efficient manner of doing so. Surely there is no need for industries that exist for entertainment rather than profit, to win over serious issues of human health, and animal and ecological welfare? I would like to encourage you as much as possible to be aware and speak out about a potential win-win situation for all involved. Eco tourism. There is already an ex-dolphin hunter who is doing this very thing as we speak. His story is beyond inspiring. He is now running an organization, called Bright Sea, which holds tours for Dolphin and Whale watching. You can read more about his inspiring story here takepart/.../poster-child-hope-izumi-ishii... bluevoice.org/news_dolphinwatching.php izumiishii/marine-tours/my-passion/ https://facebook/izumi.ishii.39?fref=ts The Taiji fishermen have both the skills as sailors, the boats, and even the knowledge of Cetaceans to be able to conduct such tours in Taiji. The climate is ideal for Eco tourism. Yet very sadly, Taiji is hated by much of the world. Most, if not all who have heard of this town, know of it only by the massacre of Cetaceans that has been being carried out there. It would seem the beauty of the area is being cloaked by the veil of this bloodbath. There is certainly public interest in viewing Cetaceans as well, based on the attendance at the Taiji whale museum. Adopting Eco tourism, would be greatly beneficial to both the residents of Taiji, the fishermen themselves, and of course the Dolphins and Whales. If this heartbreaking atrocity was brought to an end, the reputation, the health, and even the lives of the Japanese citizens would be greatly improved, especially considering the serious dangers of Mercury in Cetacean meat. Eco tourism would provide a career for these fishermen, that has actually been shown in many cases to be more profitable than Dolphin hunting. It is possible that a government grant could be created to encourage this transition, especially considering the fact that this is such a serious health issue. Taiji should not be hated, but appreciated it for the beautiful place it is, and a transition to Eco tourism would make this possible.
