The Jazz Composers Orchestra was also involved in the large scale work Escalator Over the Hill, by Carla Bley and Paul Haines, which was mentioned in the section on pianists. In the meantime Carla Bley had become increasingly prominent with medium-sized groups of her Free Big Bands The Big Bands of Jazz own, in increasingly tonal settings. Her compositions and orchestrations are imaginative collages of swinging jazz elements and national anthems (ridiculed, of course!), of world music and children’s songs and massive clusters—all this permeated with sensitive, often socially critical humor (as in a piece she wrote in 1980, after Ronald Reagan had been elected to the U.S. presidency).
